Having loved the guitar since a young girl in Brazil, the first words to Tom Jobim’s “Corcovado” have always resonated with me:
“Um cantinho um violão ….”
To me, the guitar is most beautiful and intimate when played in a little corner with no attention given to an audience. It’s that joy of being “in the moment.”
I believe our musicianship is birthed in those “in the moment” moments; when joy is present. Our technique and intellect is matured in practice and in study, but musicianship is developed and sustained by joy.
Bossa nova sustains me. It is the joy that develops me as a musician; that kindred connection to the sounds, rhythms, and music of where I grew up.
I, of course, enjoy the classical guitar repertoire and believe it is the most important foundation for a guitarist. My hands are most grateful for the lessons and abilities I now have.
So if you are serious about learning how to play the guitar, getting a solid foundation on the basic classical guitar technique is the way to go.
Give me a little corner and a guitar, and the people in my life.
